The CrossFit Open - what's the worst thing that can happen?

So you’re thinking about registering for the Open for the first time? Or maybe reading this post is the very first time anyone has asked you about it? This post is for you guys.

We know that the rest of you repeat offenders at CrossFit North 16145  have already signed up (shout out to you guys later!) so this little chat isn’t aimed at you. Other than to say ‘get the lead out’ to any of you who haven’t yet registered!

By the time this post is done, we will have hopefully convinced those who hesitate to take the plunge for the first time. To kick things off here are some things you may not know about the open;

  • It costs less than 30 bucks to register (subject to exchange rate) - over 5 weeks and 5 workouts, that’s less than 6 bucks a workout. Score!

  • Some workouts are short … some are long … but no-matter what, you’ll be done in less than an hour. That’s 1 hour (or less) of your time - once a week - for 5 weeks.

  • Your results are captured in the online leaderboard with all the other hundreds of thousands of CrossFitters world-wide. Afraid of getting lost in the crowd? Don’t worry - the leaderboard is fully customisable so that you can see your results along with everyone else in your gym.

  • Judges, score sheets, equipment etc. are all supplied so that all you need to do is load up on carbs the night before, or at breakfast and then show up. Anyone for a short-stack of blueberry protein pancakes?!

  • You do the workouts on your own - but you’re never alone. The community is with you the whole way!

  • Every Open workout is just that. A workout. You’re already working out - week in - week out.

  • The last person to finish each workout gets the biggest cheers and the loudest applause!

  • Many people train for the Open so that they perform at their best. Some would like a berth at the big show (CrossFit Games). But this is not the goal for 99.99% of CrossFitters. The rest of us just want to participate and be part of the experience.

  • Regardless of your experience - If you currently do CrossFit workouts you can take part. The Open is for everyone.

  • Completing the Open over 5 weeks is like delivering on a commitment to yourself. Once you do it, you’ll know you’ll be able to do it again. And guess what? You’ll know that you can commit to anything.

  • When you get done - after 5 weeks of awesomeness has come to an end - the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment you will enjoy will be magnified 10 times over because your friends and fellow CrossFitters will be experiencing the exact same thing. Every other CrossFitter in Cairns, in Queensland, in the world… will know exactly what you’ve been through and they will have smashed it! Just like you!

So, with all of these benefits … the question is not whether you should take part in your first CrossFit Open in 2019? The question should be ‘why haven’t you registered yet’? It’s really that simple. Don’t think about. And if you do think about it - consider the title to this post. ‘What’s the worst thing that can possibly happen?’

Well, if you sign up and decide that the Open is not for you - then you’ll be  out of pocket to the tune of $28. But if you think about that $28 as an investment, then you can also think about the benefits listed above as your rate of return. Seems like a very small price to pay for a result that will keep on yielding a positive return for a long time to come.
